  3. Minimum Blank Size: Worked Example for a Lens Order

    2 min 30 s

One lens order, checked from start to finish: a -4.00 / -2.00 x 180 prescription, PD 63, in a frame with eye size 54, bridge 17 and effective diameter 58. The minimum blank size comes to 68 mm (58, plus twice the 4 mm decentration, plus a 2 mm edging allowance), so a 70 mm blank is ordered, and the same job then goes through prism decentration, edge thickness by index, base curve and lens position.

  4. Prentice's Rule Worked Example: Induced Prism and Near Vision

    2 min 30 s

The Prentice rule says prism equals lens power times decentration in centimetres, and this video works one example through: a -5.00 D lens with the optical centre 4 mm in gives 2 prism dioptres, base out. It then combines 3 base in with 4 base up into a single resultant prism and runs four near vision figures: near PD, near addition, working distance and magnifier power.

  5. Contact Lens Power from Glasses Prescription: Vertex Distance Example

    2 min 23 s

Working out contact lens power from glasses prescription figures means correcting each meridian for vertex distance, and this video does it once in full: -6.00 / -1.50 x 180 at 12 mm becomes -5.50 / -1.25 x 180, with a toric lens advised. Three more worked examples follow: keratometry readings between millimetres and dioptres, 6/9 across the acuity notations, and a selling price built from cost, markup, discount and tax.

Eye Screening and Optical Calculator App: Phone Tools for Opticians

    2 min 49 s

The Asaan Optics Android app works as an eye screening and optical calculator app for the shop floor: nineteen calculators under Pro Calculator, and three quick tests under Eye Screening (visual acuity, colour vision and the Amsler grid). The tests are screening, not diagnosis, and they do not replace an eye examination: the app does not measure your screen or the viewing distance, so the report is a rough guide and a reason to book a full examination.
